Disturbing Evidence of Big Cat Snares: Urgent Action Needed"

According to a recent briefing by WWF and TRAFFIC, distressing evidence shows that at least 387 big cats (including tigers, leopards, snow leopards, and Asiatic lions) were caught in snares in seven Asian countries from 2012 to 2021. Most of these cases occurred outside protected areas. Tigers and leopards were particularly affected, with 33% of the cases involving tigers and 63% involving leopards.

The report emphasizes the urgent need for governments to take comprehensive measures to stop snaring before big cat populations are driven closer to extinction. The recommendations in the report highlight the importance of involving local communities and enhancing the quality and number of well-supported, effective, inclusive, and professional ranger teams to combat the impact of snares.
