Tigers are one of the biggest and strongest cats in the world. They have sharp teeth, and powerful jaws, and can move very gracefully. Tigers live in various parts of Asia, from Russia to Sumatra and Southeast Asia. Even though scientists know quite a bit about these amazing and endangered cats, there is still much more to discover.
Currently, there is one main type of tiger called Panthera tigris. But scientists have divided them further into nine subtypes, including the extinct Bali, Caspian, and Javan tigers, and the living Malayan, Sumatran, South China, Indochinese, Bengal, and Amur (also known as Siberian) tigers. Among these, three types (Amur, Malayan, and Sumatran) are managed by certain zoos. The Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute takes care of Sumatran and Amur tigers. Sadly, Sumatran tigers are in critical danger of extinction, while Amur tigers are considered endangered.
